Rev. Matthew Thomson
Matt (Matthew) was born in Haverfordwest, West Wales in 1963, the only son to Ken and Gwen Thomson. Although proud of his Welsh roots Matt moved with first to Guildford in Surrey and then to the New Forest in Hampshire where he went first to Secondary School and then to Sixth form college and where he discovered his love of rugby.
After leaving college Matt first worked for NatWest Bank in and around the Southampton area, then for a firm of estate agents, and finally for the Nationwide Building Society. During this time he came to faith and met and married Jan as a young newly qualified teacher at St John’s Church, Locksheath in 1987.
Matt left the building society world to study theology at Nottingham university in 1989 and then on to study for ministry at St John’s college. During this time Becky and Mike, Matt and Jan’s two children came into the world.
Matt was ordained in Portsmouth Cathedral in 1995 and served his first post as curate at St Phillip’s Church, Cosham on the outskirts of Portsmouth before heading to Nailsea and to Tickenham in 1998 where he became associate minister at Tickenham and Christ Church in Nailsea.
In 2001 Matt came to St Andrew’s, Congresbury and also took up the post of part-time Diocesan Healing Advisor. During the last fifteen years there has been much to reflect on and be thankful for; the creation of Vine Counselling, the joining of the churches and New Creation, Soul Gym, and the various trips to the Holy Land and elsewhere.
With much still to look forward to Matt’s other great interest is the restoration of his beloved sailing boat, the Franciscan movement, walking, jogging – badly, good friends, good food and valuing people.
